Home remodeling means a lot of different things to different people. For some it’s just new paint, furniture and décor. To others, it means tearing out walls and reconfiguring the home. Whether you are planning to work on the project yourself or hire a design/build company, make sure to do these five things.
For most, the main goal of any home remodeling project is to update the look at feel of the home. However, most people have other reasons for remodeling too. Ask yourself what you don’t like about the space you’re remodeling. Talk with your design/build company about what issues you want to overcome with the remodel. Do you need more storage space or do you need more lighting or outlets in the room?
Although you may look at a tile and fall in love with it, talk with the tile company or your remodelers about where you want to use that tile and how you plan on incorporating it. Some tile is too slick for a shower or bathroom floor. Some isn’t meant to get wet and stay wet, so it may work as a kitchen backsplash but not as a shower floor. Countertop materials vary too. Marble, for example, can easily stain and you’ll need to be careful with things like wine, food coloring and other naturally and artificially colored substances. Along the same lines, it’s generally safe to set a hot pan on granite, but that same pot could damage quartz.
Before the start of your home remodeling project, you should declutter. Get rid of things you don’t want in your home post-remodel. This will save you stress and possibly money on storage costs. This is especially true in a kitchen remodel. If you know that you no longer want your juicer, you and your design/build company don’t need to plan a place in the new kitchen to store it! If you’re planning a master suite, you can better plan your closet design if you know just how much space you need to hang full-length and half-length items (as well as shoe storage).
Whether you’re remodeling your whole home, your kitchen or a bathroom, you will need to be organized before the project begins. For whole-home remodels, you’ll likely be displaced from your home for a period. You’ll need to make sure you have what you want in storage or with you. If you’re undergoing a kitchen remodel, you’ll want a plan for meals and the things you can use in your temporary kitchen to cook and clean up.
Although many people think they can do the job for less money than a contractor, your time is valuable. Once you add in the cost of the designer/architect to draw up your changes, permitting, subcontractors for plumbing and electric, rental dumpster/debris disposal, materials and your time, you’ll quickly see the value of a design/build company.
