How to Coordinate the Backsplash & Countertop in a Kitchen Remodel

Most homeowners have a fairly easy time choosing their cabinet color and style. They even know what they want in the way of appliances and lighting for their kitchen remodel. However, one of the biggest challenges we see is choosing the right backsplash and countertop. And with the myriad of options, it’s no wonder this is such a conundrum.

Why Finding the Perfect Pairing Can be a Challenge

There was a time when a remodeling company would simply use the same countertop material for the backsplash. It would go about 4 inches up the wall, much like bathroom counters. Now, there are countless backsplash materials to choose from. When you add in the common countertop materials (granite, quartz, quartzite, marble, butcher block, soapstone, concrete and stainless steel), the options and combinations are endless. This doesn’t even take into consideration that the natural and synthetic stone materials have options of their own.

Getting Started

As a remodeling company, our advice is to begin by thinking about the style you’re going for in your kitchen remodel. For example, a farmhouse kitchen might have a combination of stone and butcher block, whereas a modern or industrial style kitchen might have concrete or stainless steel.

Depending on your kitchen remodel and what’s important to you, you may have planned as little as 10% or as much as 30% of your budget for your countertop and backsplash. Although the countertop is a visible element, the backsplash is much more so. Talk about what you have to spend and your remodeler’s recommendations for materials that fit within your budget and style. If you’re going to splurge on something, choose to splurge on the backsplash as it will tie your kitchen together.

Go Look at Options

Whether you know you want a tile backsplash or have decided on granite countertops, go look at various options in your price point. You may find that you fall in love with a particular slab. Or, you may find a tile or metal that you know you must have for your backsplash. Your remodeling company can offer suggestions to help you find the other element you need that coordinates perfectly and stays within your budget.
