3 Essential Steps to Help You Hire the Right Remodelers

You may think you’ve followed all the recommended steps when it comes to hiring the right remodeling company. After all, you’ve checked the Better Business Bureau rating, licenses and reviews, you’ve asked neighbors who they used and you got competitive quotes. But there are three steps that if missed, can make you regret your choice of remodelers in the end.

Tip #1: Look at Industry Credentials

There are many industry organizations that have membership requirements that make one remodeling company better than another. These required extra steps can indicate a variety of things, including additional or ongoing training, testing, high satisfaction rating, proper insurance and a higher quality of work. In the remodeling industry, a few of the associations and groups that require higher standards include:

  • National Association of Home Builders
  • National Kitchen and Bathroom Association
  • Certified Contractors Network

You may also find that some remodelers are nationally rated with Remodeling magazine or Qualified Remodeler magazine.

Tip #2: Talk to References

Every remodeling company can provide you with some references; the key is calling them and asking the right questions. Here are a few questions you should ask a reference:

  1. What did they do for you and do you still love the results?
  2. Was the job done on time?
  3. Did they stay within budget?
  4. Did they follow up on any issues or problems?
  5. Has the workmanship warranty been needed and, if so, honored?
  6. Throughout the process, did they keep the job site clean and organized?

This last question is essential if you’re planning on living in the home during the remodel, especially if you have kids or pets.

Tip #3: Treat Every Interaction With the Company as a Job Interview

You’re hiring this company to do a job, so treat them like a candidate for a job interview. Pay attention to the representative’s appearance and note if he or she arrived on time for each meeting. Did they send you the estimate when they promised and was it clear and comprehensive? When you visited their showroom, did you see good examples of their workmanship? Perhaps most importantly, did they ask you questions about the job? You want the remodeling company you hire to have a complete understanding of what you’re looking for out of the remodel so that you get the results you want.

You’ll find that G.M. Roth has many industry certifications and is ranked highly among all remodelers in the U.S. with multiple organizations. We also have a six-step process to help ensure the results you want.
