Tips to Maximize a Small Bathroom Space

If you’ve put off a bathroom remodel because you keep thinking that the space is just too small to bother with, think again. There are ways you can maximize a small space and make it function better for your family. Between some newly available products and design tricks, you can have a great-looking and functional bathroom, even if it’s smaller than you would like.

A survey by LightStream Home Improvement found that 73 percent of homeowners plan some sort of home improvement in 2019. Of those homeowners, the primary reason for the remodel was to reflect their lifestyle, rather than for resale, because they plan on staying in their home for 10 or more years. Nearly 40 percent of the respondents indicated that bathroom remodeling was one of their planned projects. So how do you make your small bathroom work for you and seem bigger? Here are some tricks from our experts.

Open Shelving

Because a large cabinet or linen closet is a big element in any bathroom, it can make the space seem small. One option is to choose open shelving for storage. If there are items you want to keep private, use decorative baskets on the shelves to hold them. Consider rolling towels and other linens rather than folding them for a decorative touch.

Light

If you don’t have a window in the bathroom and it’s possible to add one, do so. Natural light and the view out the window will make the space feel larger. If a window or solar tube isn’t an option, choose lighting fixtures that light the whole room, rather than just point down onto the vanity. Also, keep the color palette light.

A Walk-In Shower

A tub/shower combination is common in most smaller bathrooms, however, if you don’t need the tub, consider a walk-in shower with a glass door. The glass door will help the room to feel bigger because your view isn’t obstructed by a shower curtain.

A Floating Vanity

If you know you’re going to have a vanity, consider one that attaches to the wall rather than sitting on the floor. Because the floor itself goes under the cabinet, the room seems bigger. And, if you’re looking to add even more of the illusion, add lighting underneath the vanity too.
