There are few things more disappointing than to go through the hassle and expense of a kitchen remodel only to be disappointed with the result. Sometimes it’s the fault of the design/build company and other times it’s caused by a lack of vision for the space. Here are a few ways to avoid the most common kitchen remodeling mistakes.
Although there aren’t as many design rules in kitchen remodeling as there once were, you still want to have a cohesive vision for the space. When you don’t, the space can look disjointed and may even feel uncomfortable. When you work with a design/build company, you and your designer come together on a style and work to achieve it through careful product selection. The designer then makes sure the build team follows through on the design.
It’s OK to include a trend or two, but don’t follow every trend you see in a magazine! Often the images you see are computer renderings, not an actual kitchen. If you want to follow trends, choose those that are easy to change if you end up tiring of something in a few years. Paint colors are simple. Faucets and cabinet knobs are inexpensive and another DIY project. New backsplashes are a bit more challenging, but still something that’s not a huge expense. Flooring can be changed without a total kitchen remodel but can be quite expensive.
If you haven’t listed the shortcomings in your current kitchen, sit down and evaluate that before meeting with your design/build company. Some common ones include:
Once you’ve listed everything that’s problematic with your kitchen, list some specific things that are must-haves. Maybe it’s a pot filler, a prep sink or a bar refrigerator. Every homeowner has a different list, but having those as you go into your design meeting will help your designer come up with a plan for your kitchen so that you love it once it’s complete.
We’ve had homeowners bring in a tile (or picture of another design element) that they love and try to design their kitchen around it. Keep your options open! It’s OK to bring photos of spaces that inspire you but it’s even better to keep your mind open to your designer’s suggestions.
