Designing the Perfect Pantry

Pantries were once a staple in every home. They were the only place people stored food inside their home. Then came the advent of the refrigerator and canned goods, and pantries suddenly weren’t necessary. Over the past decade or so, they’ve seen a resurgence for several reasons.

First, people are bulk-shopping more than ever before and need more than just a few shelves for their food. Second, there are more options than ever before, so we buy lots of food! However, today’s pantries also have more options than ever before. If one of your goals in your kitchen remodel is better food storage, you need the perfect pantry.

Pantry Styles

As you begin thinking about your kitchen remodel, think about your current pantry. If you don’t have one, think about where yours may go and what it may look like. Here are some pantry styles to consider:

  • Walk-in – This is the most requested pantry style. Just as the name infers, you can walk into this pantry.
  • Wall pantry – For this option, your design/build company takes a section of the wall and builds out shelving hidden by doors, usually folding or barn style.
  • Built-in cabinet – Kitchens without a lot of space can benefit from this type of pantry. A large cabinet with slide-out shelving and in-door storage helps to maximize the space of a built-in.
  • Larder or freestanding – Although these were once quite popular, they’re not an ideal option for a kitchen remodel as it entails buying a separate piece that is not attached to the wall. It is a good way to get a pantry if you’re not remodeling.
  • Butler’s pantry – If you have a space that’s a bit out of the way, consider a butler’s pantry. It includes cabinets and countertop space much like an extension of the kitchen.

Options for Your New Space

We can’t possibly cover every option that we’ve put in custom pantries. However, we can make a few suggestions for you to think about so you have a pantry that maximizes storage space and works for you.

  1. Think about your storage containers. How tall and deep are they? Tell your design/build company what you want them to hold so that they can make sure your shelves are the sufficient size for them.
  2. What do you need to store? Cereal boxes need a different type of storage than canned goods. Let your remodeler know what you have.
  3. How low and high do you want shelving? Obviously, floor to ceiling provides the most storage, however, that may not be what you want.
  4. Will you store more than just food? Some people want to store their larger countertop appliances in the pantry, along with their food. Your design/build company can ensure that each item has a place if this is what you want.
