How to Find Space in Your Home by Remodeling

As your family changes, grows or ages, you may find that the space you currently have is no longer working for you. If moving isn’t an option, you may want to talk to a design/build company about options for adding space, re-purposing the space you have, finishing space in your attic or basement, or just remodeling your existing space.

Room Additions & Bump-Outs

Often a room addition is the ideal solution for additional space. Don’t only consider building “out.” You can also build “up.” One of the most common places for a room addition is on top of a garage or another part of your home. It may take raising the roof, but you won’t have to worry about easement issues when you build up. Another common solution is converting a porch or patio into an enclosed room.

A bump-out can provide more space on the first floor. This is especially handy if you need an eating area in your kitchen or want a bit more space in a living room. One great way to accomplish this is by removing a traditional window and adding a bay or bow window. This small space may give you exactly what you need at an affordable price.

Repurposing Space

Depending on why you need additional space, you may find that the right solution is to repurpose your existing space. Perhaps your kids are growing up and the one bathroom they share isn’t working. You can take space from an adjoining bedroom, hallway or closet and begin a bathroom remodeling project where you separate the toilet and shower area from the sink or convert one sink to two.

A no-longer-used playroom, craft room or home office can be turned into a much-needed bedroom or additional bathroom if bathroom remodeling isn’t an option. Your design/build company may see space you never considered and provide you with an idea that perfectly solves your problem.

Finish Your Basement or Attic

Some older homes have attics with full-height ceilings and tons of square footage. This and the basement are often the best solution to your need for additional space. Some of the attic finishing projects we’ve completed include:

  • Playroom
  • Master suite
  • Home office
  • Additional bedroom
  • Nursery
  • Music studio

Don’t think that your basement is too dark or damp to turn into useful space. You may be surprised at how a design/build company can transform the space. The biggest hurdle is conforming to codes when it comes to bedrooms in basements, but if you need a playroom, movie room, home office or just about anything else, even if you don’t have a walk-out basement, it can be done.
