Bringing the Family Together: Remodeling for a Multi-Generational Home

Since 1980, the number of multi-generational families living under one roof has doubled. Sometimes this is the result of children moving back in with their parents after college or divorce. It’s also attributed to adult children taking care of aging parents in their homes rather than an assisted living facility.

You may be considering assisted living for your parents but wonder if that’s the best option. If you’re not convinced it’s the right option but you also don’t want to move, a whole-home remodel might be the solution you’re looking for.

Main Floor Bedroom & Bathroom Additions

Although it’s been a trend in the south for decades, few homes in Andover, Nashua or the surrounding communities have a main floor bedroom and bathroom. It’s safest for aging parents to avoid stairs and other trip hazards, and this may mean completely reconfiguring your main floor as well as an addition.

If you truly want your parents to feel a sense of independence in your home, consider a separate entrance and sitting area in their suite. You may even want to create an efficiency apartment-style space. The benefit of this, in addition to giving them independence and privacy, is that the space will be ideal for a rental for a college student or young person in the future.

Other Updates to Consider

If your home does have a master suite on the main floor and you plan to move upstairs, there are still other updates you should consider to make the home safer for your parents and more comfortable for you. Here are a few to consider:

  • Universal design bathroom. If one of your parents is mobility-challenged, this will make using the existing bathroom easier. Universal design includes wider doorways to fit a scooter, wheelchair or walker; grab bars for safety; lower sinks and light switches; and a walk-in shower.
  • Wider hallways and door openings.
  • Faucets that can be operated with one hand or touchless models.

Kitchen Remodeling

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a multi-generational family is mealtime. When one generation teaches another a special family recipe or shares a story from decades ago, you want the right kind of space. Often, this means you’ll want to remodel your kitchen. If you didn’t need to undergo a whole-home remodel, you may want to consider remodeling your kitchen.

A new kitchen comes with many benefits, from more space for preparing meals to more space for enjoying them. Of course, you’ll also have the benefit of creating the space in your style with exactly what you need. Keep in mind that you want to ensure that the space will work for someone in a wheelchair or with a walker.

Basement Remodeling

If you have a college student who has moved home and plans to stay while they save money for their own home, you might want to consider finishing your basement. Much like creating an efficiency apartment on the main floor, the benefits of a basement remodel that includes a small kitchen and living room (in addition to a bedroom and bathroom) is the future rental potential.
