Your basement can provide space for many purposes. It can be your laundry room, home gym, a playroom or even an extra living room for family and friends. However, you may find yourself with a big problem, and that is lighting. In addition to artificial lighting, there are other ways you can brighten the space up. G.M. Roth Design Remodeling shares three of them here.
1. Paint the walls with bright colors. Ditch dark walls in favor of bright colors or light neutral colors such as white or light gray. Neutrals and pastels make your room look brighter in comparison to old, dark wood paneling or paint.
2. Add natural lighting. One of the best ways to brighten up your basement is to add natural lighting. This works if your basement is not completely below-grade, with one or more sides partially above the ground. For this, you need to install large windows that can be opened and closed with ease. If you’re worried about privacy, you can add a privacy film or choose textured glass.
3. Raise your ceiling. Although it’s not something commonly done, raising the ceiling will make your basement feel and look bigger. It also adds more space for reflective surfaces and windows. This way, you minimize the small and cramped vibe of the space.
