5 Key Elements to Think About for Your Bathroom Remodel

As you begin to picture your new bathroom, you likely have a color palette in mind. You may even have an idea for the layout. However, there are many details you will want to consider as you and your bathroom remodeling company begin to design your new space.

  1. Overall Style

Do you want your bathroom remodel to be your personal oasis? For some that means a spa-like look with soft colors and lines. For others, it may mean hues they’d find on the beach at sunrise, with lots of clean lines. Using sites like Houzz.com for inspiration can help you and your designer find an overall style you’d like to base your bathroom remodel on.

  1. Shower Only, Separate Tub & Shower or Combination Unit

Of course, a lot depends on space and which bathroom you’re remodeling. Most secondary bathrooms have either a tub/shower combination unit or just a shower. If you’re remodeling your master bathroom, you should consider whether you currently use your tub and, if so, what you like and don’t like about the one you have. If you’re going to install a separate tub and shower, you’ll also need to decide what you want for your shower. Currently, zero-entry and low-entry showers are quite popular. If space allows, you may even want a walk-in shower without a door, which is also a current trend.

  1. Flooring

Depending on the age of your home and the bathroom specifically, you likely have either linoleum or tile for your bathroom flooring. Today, you have many more options. Common flooring materials include:

  • Tile
  • Luxury vinyl tile/plank
  • Natural stone
  • Concrete
  • Cork

Some people install engineered or hardwood in bathrooms where there is not a shower, which is okay. However, with the advances in wood-look tile and luxury vinyl plank, we recommend choosing one of these materials if you want the look of hardwood.

  1. Space

If you’re changing the layout, you may not have a full understanding of how the space will function. For a master bathroom where you need space for two spouses to get ready at the same time, you will want to consider how you’re changing the space. Can you both stand in front of your sink without bumping into one another? Can you open drawers or cabinets without issue? Make sure your new layout will work for you; otherwise, you won’t love your bathroom remodel.

  1. Tile

Tile can be a significant portion of your bathroom remodeling budget. This is especially true when you have a walk-in shower, tile flooring and tile around your tub. As you look at tile that will be on the floor in the bathroom and shower, feel it. Make sure it’s not going to be slippery when wet. If you’re choosing more than one tile pattern and style, put them together to get an idea of how they look against one another. You’ll also need to determine how you’re going to install them in the space, which can change the overall feel as far as size.
