Evaluating the Possibilities of a Room Addition

Adding onto your home is a great way to create space. It’s also a great way to avoid moving. If you wish you had more space in your home, talk to a remodeling company about the feasibility of a room addition. You may find that an addition is not only possible, but also a great way to avoid the hassle of moving.

Is a Room Addition the Right Option for You?

Sometimes it’s clear you need to move to have the type of space you want or need; other times, you may waver between a room addition and a move. Here are some questions to discuss with your spouse or family to help you decide.

  1. Why do we need extra space?
  2. What type of space do we need?
  3. Who will use the space?
  4. How long do we plan on remaining in the home if we add on? Will this addition allow us to remain in the home as long as we desire?
  5. Is this part of a larger home makeover or a standalone project?

Once you answer all or some of these questions, you may know whether you should call a remodeling company or a realtor.

Is an Addition Possible?

Once you’ve decided that an addition is the right solution, you’ll need to find out if an addition is possible. The first step is to understand your community regulations. This may mean everyone from your homeowners’ association (HOA) to your city or municipality. In some cases, historic homes can’t have any exterior changes. Other times, the HOA limits the size of the home and your addition may exceed it. There are also cases where you don’t have enough property to build out and building up isn’t an option, as you may need the space at ground level.

Once you’ve determined that space or regulations aren’t an issue, you should contact a remodeling company to discuss your needs and wants regarding an addition. At that point, they’ll help you with design ideas and a rough estimate of the cost. You’ll want to have a basic idea of the ceiling height, type of flooring and any special features you’re looking for. Once you’re confident that they can prepare a solution you’ll love, the remodeling company will work to create a more formal design and proposal.
