Things to Consider for a Successful Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel is something most families want to do only one time. When you work with an experienced remodeling company, the chances of you loving the result is much higher than if you work with a general contractor (or try it as a do-it-yourself project). We have some tips to help you as you begin to think about your remodel.

Start With What You Don’t Like in Your Kitchen

Since you’re thinking about a kitchen remodel, we assume that there is a lot that you don’t like about your current kitchen. The more you can tell your remodeling company what you don’t like about your current kitchen, the easier we can help you create the kitchen you really want. Try to answer each of these questions:

  1. Do you like the current layout? Does it work for your family?
  2. Are you short on drawer space?
  3. Do you have sufficient cabinet space?
  4. What about prep space? Do you have enough? Do you wish for one uninterrupted space or several smaller spaces so multiple people can work in different places?
  5. Is it too dark? Do you want more natural light or more artificial light? Or do you think that lighter cabinets, countertops and flooring will improve the overall feel of the space?

Write down the answers to these questions. Also list anything else you don’t like about your current kitchen.

Look at Elements in Pictures

If you’ve ever watched one of the shows that features a family looking at new homes, one person often says something like, “Oh, I love the cabinets, but why did they choose these countertops? I would have to do a complete kitchen remodel.” Don’t think like that! As you look at pictures or watch remodeling shows, look at the elements of a kitchen. Start putting together a gallery of what you like and don’t like – for example, if you find a stain or paint color on a cabinet that you love. You may later find a cabinet style you love. Share these elements with your remodeling company so we can find products that capture the color and style you’re looking for.

Communicate

Once you and your remodeler reach the point where you have a design layout and some product examples for your kitchen remodel, tell us honestly how you feel about it. We are not mind-readers and our feelings won’t be hurt if you don’t love everything! It’s our goal to create a new kitchen that you love and we will work with you until we achieve that goal.
