You’re ready for a new kitchen. You may have even called a few remodeling companies for an estimate for your kitchen remodel. However, after seeing the quotes, you may have decided to be your own remodeler. But is that really a good idea? Have you taken all that a remodeling company does for you into consideration? If you haven’t, you should.
A kitchen remodel takes a lot of time. And that’s not just the time to tear out the old kitchen and install the new. There’s the time spent ordering materials, applying for and pulling permits, coordinating sub-contractors like plumbers and electricians, getting rid of garbage and picking up miscellaneous supplies. You should look at how much your time is worth and how long it may take you to handle your kitchen remodel alone.
Don’t just think about the work that needs to be done. Also consider the time it will take you to learn something new like installing a tile backsplash. Ask yourself honestly will it take you weeks or months more where you will have to eat out (which is expensive!) or live with a very limited kitchen?
Have you truly taken into consideration all the expenses of a kitchen remodel? Here are a few that a remodeler includes in the quote you may not be thinking about.
Of course, other things like a business license and insurance are also factored into every remodeling project to some extent.
Do you want a new kitchen simply because yours is dated or are there elements that aren’t working for you? Even if you think that the layout is fine, a designer from a kitchen remodeling company may be able to improve upon what you already have. Minor changes like taller cabinets or drawers instead of cabinets can make a big difference in your usable space. Because the remodeling company has connections with different suppliers, they know more about what’s available that may solve an issue you have. Don’t discount the value that the remodeler’s designer brings.
You may look at the cost of cabinets at your local home improvement store and wonder why the cabinets the remodeler quoted are more than those. There is a significant difference in quality of a stock cabinet and a semi-custom cabinet. Makes sure that you compare the materials (wood versus pressboard for example) and the construction (dovetail drawers or not).
Also consider the quality of the work. If you hire an experienced and well-respected kitchen remodeler, they should stand behind their work. That usually means that they’ll do the job with the goal of you loving their work. So, you’ll end up with a kitchen remodel you love more when it’s completed by a professional than if you did it yourself.
