Contemporary Kitchen Remodeling Design Ideas

Many of the older homes in our area only look dated because of the kitchen. Outdated style is the #1 reason homeowners call a remodeling company for a new kitchen. If you know you want to undergo a kitchen remodeling project to update style but don’t know how to get started, here are some suggestions that may help you, even before your first meeting with a remodeling company.

Look at Images

With the internet at your fingertips, you have countless places to find inspiration for the style you may want. If you have already picked a remodeling company, look at their website or ask them which cabinet manufacturers they use. Both can provide you with inspiration for your style. Remember, the major elements of any kitchen remodel are the cabinets, countertops and backsplash. Don’t feel like you have to make a choice before you meet with your designer, but having an idea of what you like and don’t like will help with the design process.

Consider Contemporary Features

Your current kitchen probably has a row of drawers on top of base cabinets. A contemporary kitchen has many different design options. You can stick with the traditional, but why not consider something more modern like open shelving or glass-front cabinets? Lighting is another way to create a more up-to-date kitchen.

Don’t Be Afraid of Color

If you look at older kitchens, they almost always have either white or wood cabinets paired with white, black or stainless appliances. One way to go contemporary is with painted cabinets. Another method is using two different cabinet colors. Sometimes, homeowners choose one cabinet color for their island and another for the rest of the kitchen. Other times, upper and lower cabinets complement but don’t match one another.

Appliances are another fun way to add color. You can find some upscale appliance lines in everything from bright blues and reds to more subtle teal or yellow. Of course, cabinet-front appliances are a common trend in contemporary kitchen remodeling. If bright appliances or colored cabinets are just a bit too much for your taste, look at a colorful backsplash with a bold pattern.

Update Lighting

One of the most dated features in many kitchens is either florescent lights on the ceiling or a drop ceiling with florescent lights. Today’s kitchens typically have recessed can lighting. In kitchens where this isn’t possible, track lighting can be used. You will also want some pendant lights over your island or peninsula. If you want to add a nice touch, look at undercabinet lighting. Although this will add to your kitchen remodeling budget, it’s one of the best changes you can make in style and function.
