Choosing the Right Finishes for Your Home Remodel

Whether you’re planning a whole-home remodel or just remodeling your kitchen, the finishes you choose are important. These little details are what can pull the space together or add a personal touch. Depending on the extent of your remodel and what you’re choosing, finishes include different elements.

choosing the right finishes for your home remodel

General Finishes

In a whole-home remodel, you need new floors. If you choose hardwood flooring, you’re going to need to choose both a stain color and finish for your floors. Finishes for wood floors are similar to those of paint. They include:

  • Flat or matte
  • Satin
  • Semi-gloss
  • High gloss

High gloss was once the most common because it reflects light and makes a space seem brighter, even when using a dark stain. However, satin and matte are more popular now, in part because that is the trend, and in part because people with kids and pets know that scratches are less evident on a matte finish. An added bonus of choosing a low-gloss finish is that dirt doesn’t show as easily.

Windows and doors are another often-replaced element in a whole-home remodel. Today, the most common window material is vinyl. It’s popular because it’s affordable and low-maintenance. But, because vinyl comes in so many color options, you’ll have to decide the color for both the interior of the frames and sashes and the exterior. Black is popular right now, but if it doesn’t work with the style and colors of your home, it’s best to stick with traditional white or off-white.

Finishing Touches for the Kitchen & Bath

There are so many ways of adding your own style to a kitchen remodel. Unique door handles and knobs, light fixtures and faucets are a few. Because kitchen remodeling styles vary so significantly, so can the finishes on these elements. In fact, they don’t even have to match. You may want to stick with traditional satin nickel faucets and door handles but go with some bright pendant lights over your counter. Or, consider some fun and colorful door handles and coordinating faucets and light fixtures. These finishing touches can showcase your style without compromising the overall style of your space.

Whether the bathroom you’re remodeling is your private space or a hall bathroom or one that’s shared by several kids, there are many ways to have fun with finishes in the bathroom. Consider a bold tile wall behind the toilet or surrounding the tub. Want something less permanent? Buy a fun and funky mirror to hang over the sink. Vessel sinks are another great way to add a stylish focal point in the space.
