5 Design Elements of Cottage-Style Kitchens

Cottage-style kitchens are popular among homeowners who want cozy and timeless spaces. While the cottage look features elements that can be considered as rustic, getting it right requires more than just taking the DIY route. In this blog post, G.M. Roth Design Remodeling explores the crucial elements of cottage-style kitchens.

  1. Open shelving. The cabinetry is a major design element in kitchens of any style. In a cottage-style kitchen, doing away with cabinet doors indicates a no-nonsense approach to organization. Kitchen equipment, dinnerware and decorative items are all on display, easily accessible. It’s important to consider that open shelves need to be organized thoughtfully, as all their contents are laid bare.
  2. Old or reclaimed materials. Reclaimed timber, repurposed furniture and even an old farmhouse sink can add a lived-in feel, perfect for a cottage-style kitchen. In addition to antique stores, old or reclaimed materials can be sourced from estate or yard sales, farmhouses, or even from friends or relatives. Make sure that the materials are still in good working condition — keep an eye out for rot and rust.
  3. Cozy seating. A cottage-style kitchen won’t be complete without cozy seats. One of the best things about cottage-style kitchens is mismatched furniture won’t look out of place. You can have different-looking chairs and make them cozy with pillows.
  4. Simple color palette. A simple and natural color palette works best for cottage-style kitchens. Forget about the color of the year — choose crisp and clean hues that evoke wood, water and the sky. They may look plain in an empty kitchen, but it will be filled in with pops of color once you start adding furniture, tile and other elements.
  5. Patterned fabrics. Gingham, toile and other patterned fabrics can add a touch of cottage charm to the kitchen. They’re ideal for window treatments, tablecloths and dishware, as they add visual interest and warmth to the space.
