The Difference Between a Home Remodel & Home Renovation

The terms “remodeling” and “renovation” are often used interchangeably. However, they’re technically different. Although most contractors handle both, if you see a company marketing itself as a home renovation company, they may not have the team or skills to make major changes to your home.

A Home Remodel Means Changing the Structure

If want to take your living room, dining room and kitchen and create an open-concept living area, you need a home remodeling company. However, if you’re just looking to keep your kitchen the same but modernize the style with new flooring and cabinets, a home renovation company will work for you.

Think of a home renovation company as a company that modernizes the space without changing its form or function. It’s a much more budget-friendly option than remodeling. It’s also a faster process most of the time. For example, a kitchen renovation means that you keep the same general layout but update the style.

Sometimes you don’t know until you talk to several contractors and discuss your hopes and budget. Often, your budget determines if you end up renovating or remodeling. A remodel requires a bigger budget because of the scope of the project. However, if you speak with a remodeling company, chances are that they can help you, whether you choose a renovation or remodel. However, the reverse isn’t always true. Not all home renovation companies have the knowledge or staff to handle structural changes.

Can the Company You’re Talking to Handle Your Project?

There are several things you should do before hiring a home remodeling or home renovation company.

  • Look at images of their previous work. Does the scope of those projects seem similar to yours?
  • Ask questions about their experience with removing walls, adding onto a home or whatever you’re planning.
  • Find out if they have an architect or structural engineer on staff or retainer who will verify whether a wall you’re removing is load-bearing.
  • Ask for references, check their BBB listing and see if they’re members of any trade organizations like the National Kitchen and Bath Association, Certified Contractors Network or National Association of Home Builders. These are ways to verify their work and experience.

Although a detailed contract doesn’t guarantee they can do the work, it will help protect you and ensure the job is done as you want it to be.

Who Should You Hire?

In the end, it doesn’t matter if you decide to remodel or renovate, as long as you’re satisfied with the result. As an experienced home remodeling company, we handle both renovations and remodels.
