Most homes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire have basements. If you have one and aren’t using the space, basement finishing is a great way to add more space in your home without the expense of a home addition. If yours is finished but doesn’t have the type of space you need, a basement remodel may be in order.
That depends. Code requires that any basement being used as a living space (meaning any finished basement), needs at least one way out in the event of a fire. So, if your basement is entirely underground, you’ll need at least one window added as an escape route. Walk-out basements have many more options. They can be converted into anything from a playroom to a mother-in-law suite. As with any space you finish, the shape and square footage will determine what you can do with the room.
Multi-purpose rooms, also called flex spaces, are a great solution when you need more rooms but have only a fixed amount of space. Take a look at how your space is currently configured to get an idea of what you may be able to do with your basement remodel. Note where there are walls. Chances are good that some, if not all, of those walls are load-bearing or have a load-bearing element and may need to stay. If there’s electrical or plumbing, you may want to keep those walls for that reason as well. Your remodeler will be able to guide you.
If you need to use the room for several purposes, you don’t have to create several small, separate rooms. There are many ways to make the room a multi-purpose room without leaving everything out in the open. Here are a few ideas:
Remember, basements tend to be colder than the rest of the home. That’s a bonus in the summer as you may not need to cool the space; however, the winter will require heat. If your current furnace or boiler can support the additional square footage, that’s the best solution. If not, consider a ventless fireplace or ductless unit.
If water has ever been a problem in your basement, you may want to consider resilient flooring that can stand up to water. Luxury vinyl tile and traditional tile are two options. Some homeowners take the risk and put in carpet, knowing they may need to replace it in the event of water damage.
