Potential Bathroom Remodeling Issues

Whether you’re planning a total bathroom remodel or just giving the space a refresh, issues are bound to come up. From our experience as professional remodeling contractors, we know that the probability of encountering the unexpected is relatively high in any type of bathroom remodel. We want to share with you some potential issues that we’ve seen as a result of DIY remodeling.

Bathroom Refresh

This is typically something that homeowners tackle themselves. It often involves the following:

  • Fresh paint
  • New faucets
  • Upgrading light fixtures
  • Replacing towel bars & toilet paper holder

At first glance, this seems like a simple list. However, there are some mistakes homeowners make that you can avoid with just a little planning.

First, if you’re upgrading your faucets, look at the entire space. Make sure to consider the tub and shower as well as your sink. You should update all faucets for a cohesive look, and not all sink faucets have a tub and shower option. So before you find one you love, make sure you know exactly what you need.

Next, when looking at faucets, remember there are pre-drilled holes in your countertop for the faucet. Make sure you choose a new one that matches the configuration you already have.

The same goes with light fixtures and towel bars. You may be painting but if you’re not interested in drywall work, make sure the new ones are the same size as the ones you currently have so you don’t have to patch the walls. If you’re planning on adding new towel bars, invest in the right tools like a stud finder and, if drilling into tile, the right type of drill bit.

Bathroom Update

Both remodeling contractors and homeowners with skill and time can handle a bathroom update. This type of remodel keeps the configuration the same but updates the flooring, cabinets, countertops and all fixtures. You can find the same sort of hurdles with this type of remodel and a few others, like a rotting sub-floor beneath your current floor. If you’re working with a bathroom remodeling company, they can make drywall repairs or recommend fixtures that meet your current light and towel bar configurations.

Total Bathroom Remodel

Because a total bathroom remodel includes reconfiguring or even adding on to the space, you’ll likely want to work with a bathroom remodeling company. This doesn’t mean that they won’t uncover issues. Because you’re moving plumbing and electrical, they may find that you need to replace these systems in order to be within today’s code.
