How to Keep Your Home Remodel on Schedule

The expression “timing is everything” can apply to many facets of life. When it comes to a home remodel, you want the project to remain on schedule from start to finish (or finish sooner than expected). As you look to hire a design/build company, here are some things that can help keep your project on schedule.

How to Keep Your Home Remodel on Schedule

Go Over the Timeline With Your Design/Build Company

If a contractor can’t provide you with a written timeline before you give them a check, you should probably choose another design/build company. While you may not receive a detailed timeline before signing the contract, you should have a good idea of the start and completion dates as well as some other key dates, like when they will request permits, demolition, cabinet delivery, and plumbing and electrical work. Once you finalize your plans, the timeline should be set.

Constant Communication

Although you likely won’t get an update every day of your project, you should receive an update on your home remodel at least once per week. This may be in the form of a call or an in-person conversation with the job foreman, or it may be via online software that you can log into and check at any time.

However, communication needs to go both ways. Let your contractor know questions you have or scheduling issues as soon as they come up. When you communicate back and forth, work is more likely to get done how you expected and when you expected.

Have a Plan for Pets & Kids

This is especially true on days when it’s going to be loud or when the contractors will be in and out of your home frequently (like tile installation in a bathroom). Although the workers want to keep your pets, kids and property safe, they also have a job to do. When you have a plan to stay out of each other’s way, the job can continue as it should and the project can finish on time.

Follow Through on Your Deadlines

Although you may not think that you need to make design decisions by a certain date, if you want your project to move forward on time, you must. Even seemingly minor things like cabinet knobs may take weeks to come in and when you don’t let your design/build company know your choice by the date they’ve provided, the project can’t finish on time.
