How Long Does a Whole-Home Renovation Take?

A whole-home renovation is a great way to increase your home’s value and make it more comfortable and appealing. Remodeling your entire home can involve a wide range of subprojects, including deck renovation and kitchen remodeling

To help you plan your whole-home renovation, you need to know what to expect and how long your project will likely take. G.M. Roth Design Remodeling highlights the three stages of a whole-home renovation and the factors that can affect the length of the project.

The Three Phases of Remodeling

There are three phases of a whole-home renovation: discovery, design and construction. In the discovery phase, you need to interview different contractors and design firms. This helps you determine what you can do in your remodel and how much you need to budget. It’s always best to interview several different firms to get a wide range of ideas. Depending on how many people you interview and how long it takes to find the right people for the project, this can take anywhere from two weeks to two months.

After selecting a firm to do your whole-home renovation, it’s time for the second phase: design. A lot of planning meetings occur during this stage. The larger your remodel, the longer this phase will take. Take note of the size of your project, how long engineering takes and how many design revisions you make. This can last from a minimum of six weeks to 3-4 months.

Finally, the project moves to the construction phase. Since this is where the actual renovation will take place, it will have the biggest impact on the timeline. For small home remodels, this may take four to six months. Meanwhile, large home remodels, which may include house additions, can take six to 12 months and sometimes even longer, depending on the complexity of the job.

Factors That Can Affect the Length of the Renovation

Many factors can affect the length of your renovation. Here are some examples below:

  • House size. As mentioned earlier, the bigger your house, the more time it takes to remodel it. If you have a large estate, each phase of the renovation could take longer than average.
  • Structural issues. No matter how well you prepared and planned your renovation, there are still some circumstances you won’t be able to foresee. These may include mold and water damage or a cracked foundation.
  • Weather. Inclement weather can delay your renovation. As such, it’s important to ask your prospective contractor their plans in the event a storm takes place.
  • HOA delays. If you live in a community with a homeowners association, you likely need approval before you start the project.
