Fun Elements for Your New Deck or Porch

Whether you’re building a new deck or remodeling your existing outdoor living space, adding some fun and unique elements is a way to customize your space. Think about your interests, family and entertaining style. Once you do, you may find many ways to make your space truly your own!

Fun Elements for Your New Deck or Porch

The Entertainer

If your family loves to entertain, there are lots of options you may want to include in your new deck. Add a bar with a drink station, ice maker and refrigerator, and you’ll never have to leave the party to make a guest a drink. Plus, if you have kids, you can keep their drinks outside for easy access anytime.

Another great option is built-in seating. With our cold and sometimes harsh winters, most homeowners bring in patio furniture and store it in the basement or garage during the cold months. When you incorporate seating into your patio using brick or stone, it’s impervious to the elements. All you need to do is add some outdoor cushions – which are much easier to store when not in use.

Family Space

If your reason for remodeling your outdoor living space is so that it works better for your family’s needs, consider making the space more fun for everyone. Is your porch off the ground enough to add a slide? If your backyard isn’t big enough for a playset, consider a slide off the back. If you’re adding a pergola or covered porch, talk to your remodeler or builder about reinforcing it so that you can add a few swings, a hammock or a porch-style swing.

Gardening Guru

If you love gardening but with the addition of your new deck, you feel that you will no longer have the space to garden, add some raised garden beds to the exterior of the porch or patio. This addition can also define the space around a patio and provide some privacy if you choose to add a trellis or plant taller flowering plants. If you’re an avid cook and love fresh herbs, this is an excellent place to add them.

Romantic Evenings

One element you don’t want to overlook is lighting. Although you probably want some bright lighting for entertaining, you may want the option of softer light when you want to relax with a special someone in your hammock or on your new porch swing. Although many people first think of dimmable lights, don’t overlook in-ground lighting as an option. Uplights can add to the overall ambiance for both entertaining and when you just want a soft glow. Depending on air flow where you are, an outdoor fan may be another item to consider. When you add these elements during the planning, you have many more options and the finished space looks better without power cords or extension cords strewn about.
