Flooring Trends for 2020

Good remodelers know that a floor finishes the room and choosing the right flooring makes a difference in how a room looks and feels. Whether you’re simply remodeling your kitchen, a bathroom or planning a whole home remodeling project, you’ll need new flooring. The good news is that trends in flooring change slower than trends in other types of home décor because people keep their flooring longer.

Wood Flooring

Hardwood floors are always desirable; however, today’s most popular hardwood flooring selection includes planks at least four inches wide and with variable-length boards. As for finishes, there are many trendy options including:

  • Natural or no stain
  • Grey or greige stain
  • Dark stain
  • Whitewashes

Another trend is environmentally friendly materials like reclaimed hardwood and bamboo. If bamboo is an option you consider, only choose American-made products if you want a safe, quality product.

Tile Flooring

Tile is a great option for bathrooms and laundry rooms. The two biggest trends in tile today are wood-look tile and large-format tile. If you want the look of wood in any wet area, you can’t go wrong with quality wood-look tile. Large-format tile is a great option when you’re looking to make a room grand. Plus, it brings the benefit of not having as much grout to clean. Keep in mind that installation of large-format tile can cost significantly more than standard or plank-style tile as it takes two people to install each tile. Another popular option is marble tile, especially in the bathroom. Not only is it a great option for flooring, but also the shower walls. One tile style that’s quite passé is square tile that’s all the same color. If you really want square tile, make sure to choose one with a pattern or have several plain-colored tiles installed in a pattern.

Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring

Many remodelers have seen luxury vinyl tile (LVT) growing in popularity, and for good reason. LVT isn’t tile and it’s not the vinyl flooring you may be picturing. With today’s technology, the patterns are more intricate and detailed than older vinyl flooring. They come in all designs including marble, travertine, wood and slate. Plus, the sizes vary from standard tiles to large-format to plank-style. One reason LVT is so popular is that it is extremely durable, water-resistant and easy to maintain and clean. Many brands have non-slip finishes, making it a great option in bathrooms.
