Family-Friendly Features for Your New Deck

As a deck builder, we’ve been asked to incorporate some unique elements in our construction. We’ve also helped homeowners create a deck they love by sharing some of the creations we’ve done for others. Here are a few elements you might want to ask about when designing a new deck or outdoor living space.

For the Family

Although it’s great to entertain on your deck, most of the time, it will be just your immediate family. As you and your deck builder talk about the size, layout and features you want to include, think first about your family. One feature that might be essential if your deck is more than a few inches off the ground is a gate at the top of the stairs. A gate can keep your pets and kids in. If you’re tight on space, consider built-in seating. A bench along one of the outside walls is a great way to create more seating in less space than a table with chairs around it.

Fun Kid Features

Depending on the height of your deck, your budget and the age of your children, there are lots of fun elements you can incorporate in your deck. One of our favorites is a slide from the edge of the deck down to the ground. Ideally, you want your deck to be at least six feet off the ground. Some slides are as tall as 14 feet! Another idea that also requires some height to your deck is a clubhouse under the deck. Kids can have their own place to hide and play without leaving the yard. They may be underfoot, but they won’t be in the way! If your deck isn’t high enough off the ground, add a built-in table just their size.

Adult Ideas

If you plan on entertaining on your new deck, instead of just installing a railing for safety, make it useful by making it wide enough to sit drinks and small plates on. Of course, if your deck gets lots of sun but zoning prohibits an actual roof, consider a pergola. Often, because a pergola isn’t considered a roofed or permanent structure, they’re allowed. You may be surprised at just how much shade they create. If you do add a roof or pergola, ask about lighting and a fan. String lights around the perimeter are especially popular. Choose ones that can change colors with a remote and you have holiday decorations for every holiday, without all the work.
