5 Not-So-Glamorous Things to Expect When Remodeling

Most homeowners agree that the end result was worth the inconveniences they experienced during their bathroom, kitchen or whole home remodel. However, many wish they’d known beforehand what to expect. As an experienced remodeling company, we thought we’d share these five things so you’re not surprised during a job.

Dust

There’s dust before, during and even after the project is complete. Although a good remodeling company will cover furniture and enclose areas as much as possible, you’ll still find dust throughout your home. If the remodel is during a season when you’re running your heating or air conditioning unit, replace your filters every few weeks.

Noise

Depending on the day and the work going on, it may be loud in your home. This may be disruptive to kids’ nap schedules and to pets. In some cases, your remodeling company may do some work like cutting tile or wood outside. Although this will cut down on the dust indoors, the noise may bother neighbors. If you plan on remodeling any part of your home, you should let your neighbors know the work dates.

Timing

Although a remodeling company lays out a timeline and does all they can to adhere to it, there are sometimes unexpected delays. One of the most common delays we see is with inspections. Most of the time, we know how far booked out the inspectors are but all too often things change – i.e. they have sick days and get behind. That means we may not be able to continue the job until the electrical, drywall or insulation inspection is complete. Other common delays include cabinets not arriving on the scheduled date or the stone company pushing us out a few days.

The Unexpected

With so many older homes throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, when we’re remodeling, we find many unexpected things. Although it’s less common with smaller jobs, when you are undergoing a whole home remodel, the unexpected is almost expected. Depending on what we find, we may need to call in other professionals to ensure the safety of your family.

The Punch List

Although we strive to have every job perfect at completion, that’s not always the case. Sometimes the kitchen faucet we ordered arrived damaged, so we installed one we had on hand until the one you wanted arrives. Other times, there are imperfections in the drywall that require repair. Sometimes you notice something that’s not quite right days after your walkthrough with your site manager. All of these items must be added to the punch list.
