4 Modern Features of a Laundry Room Remodel

A laundry room remodel comes with many benefits, from having the space you’ve always wanted to storage with style. There are many things you can do to create the space you want and need that weren’t common even five years ago. We love some of these new features for both a laundry room remodel and a mudroom addition.

4 Modern Features of a Laundry Room Remodel

The Locker

This trend started in the South and has quickly made its way to the Northeast. A locker is a way to organize your family’s shoes, backpacks, jackets and sporting goods. It can be part of a mudroom addition or incorporated into the laundry room. Most have a bench to sit on, making putting shoes on easy. Under the bench, you can either add cubbies or a basket for shoes. The back may be shiplap, beadboard or plain wood. The key is including hooks to hang things when you come in from school, work or playing outside. If the height of the space allows for it, you may want to add additional storage on top, either in baskets or an enclosed cabinet.

Washer & Dryer

There’s no arguing that today’s washers and dryers come in more configurations that we ever thought possible. The first thing you’ll need to think about is whether you want a top- or front-loading washing machine. That may influence the design of your laundry room remodel. Of course, stackable machines are another option.

Next, you should look at size. You have two options: find a machine that handles the average load for your family to cut down on the number of loads you do or finding a machine that fits your space, even if it’s smaller. Depending on the other elements you want in your space, your budget and if you’re building a laundry or mudroom addition along with your remodel, you may decide to choose a smaller washer and dryer to make everything fit.

Folding Space

Although you may not love folding clothes, if there is a space to do it, the job is probably more enjoyable. There are many ways to accomplish this in your laundry room remodel. One is simply adding countertop space. Of course, you need a fair amount of space to do this. There are other solutions. One is a fold-down countertop. This can go above your washer and dryer or fold down from another space. Another option is a pull-out shelf.

Wet Areas

If you have kids or even a dog, a small shower in your laundry room can cut down on a lot of dirt in your home. A small shower area with a low showerhead is perfect for rinsing muddy kids, shoes and pets any time of year. In every laundry room remodel, we recommend adding a sink. A deep sink serves many purposes beyond just pretreating stained clothes.
