How to Get Started Finishing Your Basement

Many families buy a home with every intent of finishing the basement, but put it off year after year. Either they can’t figure out what to do with everything that’s being stored in the basement or aren’t sure how to make the space work for their needs and within their budget. There are three easy steps you can take to get started planning your basement finishing project.

  1. Define the purpose of your space. Some homeowners want a spare bedroom while others want a play area for kids, a home theater or even a man cave. Once you define how you want to use your finished basement, you’ll be able to start designing.

  2. Consider layout and budget. If you are creating a bedroom, local laws may require a window or door for egress in case of fire. TV viewing is best done with no glare, so plan to hang the TV on a wall away from natural light. Finally, if you’re including a mini-fridge or bar area, find a spot that doesn’t interrupt TV viewing. Remember the 80/20 rule of remodeling: plan on spending no more than 80% of your maximum budget and reserve 20% in case the unexpected happens during the project, or work with a Design Build company who can give you a clearer expectation of expenses before the project begins.

  3. Consult your local design-build contractor. Although some people choose to finish a basement themselves, there are many benefits to hiring a basement remodeling company. Professionals will inspect for moisture, obtain proper permitting, and many can even test for radon leaks. They also have professional designers on staff who can maximize the use of the space. If that means moving a laundry room or adding a bathroom, they will have electricians and plumbers available to handle each project safely and professionally.

Basement Remodeling Pays Off

Having a finished basement gives you extra space and increases the value of your home. According to Remodeling magazine’s annual Cost Vs. Value Report, a basement remodel can give you up to a 70% return on investment when you sell your home. More importantly while you are living in your home, you will have the enjoyment of your new space.
