Turning Your Bathroom Into Your Personal Haven

Your bathroom should be a space you enjoy spending time in. If yours doesn’t suit your needs or style, it’s time for a bathroom remodel. By working with a design/build company, you can create a space that provides you with the privacy and comfort you desire.

Turning Your Bathroom Into Your Personal Haven

The elements that go into a bathroom don’t vary much, so you may wonder how you can create an ideal personal haven. Here are four things to discuss with your design/build company as you start to plan your bathroom remodel:

  • Layout
  • Style
  • Must-have elements
  • Lighting

Layout

One of the most requested changes to a master bathroom is a private toilet area. If this is a desired part of your bathroom remodel, mention it first, as that requires a bit more space. From there, you and your designer will discuss a bathtub/shower combination or separate shower and tub. If you desire a separate tub, do you want a freestanding tub, garden tub or one with jacuzzi jets? Will there be two vanities or just one with two sinks? Your answers to these questions will influence the layout.

Style

If this room is to be a haven, you want it to be relaxing. For some, the beach is relaxing so the style should incorporate whites, blues, tans and other beach-inspired colors. If you love the outdoors but not the beach, perhaps greens, browns and other earth tones should inspire your palette. Yet style isn’t just about color; look at the many vanity options for inspiration as that can set the tone for your style.

Must-Have Elements

Everyone has something they are lacking in their current bathroom or something they saw in a magazine or online that they would like to add. It may be something essential, like storage, or something you wished you had for convenience, like a second sink. Natural light is an often-requested element in a bathroom remodel. You and your design/build company should discuss these preferences early in the process as they may greatly impact your budget.

Lighting

Not everyone realizes what a major part lighting plays in a bathroom. You want fixtures that not only provide the right amount of light to get ready each day, but also reflect the style you’re going for. We’ve seen big changes in bathroom lighting in recent years. Although sconce-style fixtures over the vanity are still the most common, you may want to add another light source. Consider a chandelier with dimmable bulbs for a relaxing bath. You may want can lighting over the shower. Additionally, if you have a separate toilet area, you’ll need lighting in there.
