Surviving a Bathroom Remodel: Tips From the Pros

You want a new bathroom – but but don’t know if you and your family can survive the inconvenience of a remodel. Depending on family dynamics and how many bathrooms you have, getting through a bathroom remodel may involve varying levels of difficulty. Of course, if you only have one bathroom in your home, surviving the process likely entails some time out of your home (or very understanding neighbors). Here are some tips to help you survive the process.

Work With an Experienced Bathroom Remodeling Company

Because bathroom remodeling creates an inconvenience for all family members from the day the project starts until it’s completed, you want it to take as little time as possible. Most homeowners don’t realize that a comprehensive bathroom remodel typically requires electrical upgrades, plumbing, tile work and many other trades.  Any one of these phases being delayed can create havoc with the schedule.  The benefit of working with an experienced home remodeling company is a streamlined, professional process. The pros have vendors that they can count on to provide the cabinets, countertops and sinks on time. Staffing is scheduled properly so there are no gaps between when the plumbing is roughed in and tile is laid.

Plan Ahead

Ask your bathroom remodeling company how long it will take. After they have finalized your design, helped you through product selection and you have agreed upon a price, find out their start date for the project. If you can, plan to be on vacation during the construction, or send kids to camp or to stay with family members. Being down one toilet and shower may not seem like a big deal – until the line forms and people start arguing. The fewer people using one bathroom, the better. If your family includes little ones, now is not the time to start potty training!

Another part of planning is making sure you’ve made all the decisions. Don’t wait to choose your faucet or shower head because you may find that the one you want takes weeks to arrive – delaying the completion of the project. You shouldn’t have to check to be sure all decisions are recorded and your remodeler has all the components for your new bathroom before tear-out begins, that should be handled by the contractor so they can check the parts when they come in and avoid delays caused by incomplete or defective products.

Be Flexible

School starts at a set time, so kids don’t have the option of changing their schedules. However, you may be able to work with your employer to work a bit earlier or later in an effort to alleviate some of the morning bathroom traffic. Some family members could shower at night to reduce the time they spend in the bathroom in the morning. Set up a mirror at the kitchen or laundry room sink for shaving, face washing and teeth brushing.
