Selecting a Backsplash During Your Kitchen Remodel

Kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular and effective home improvement projects. One of the last elements typically chosen is the backsplash, yet it is a design feature that takes some careful consideration. Here are some things to think about as you’re planning your kitchen remodel.

Backsplash Height

Your overall kitchen remodeling design may play a part in how high the backsplash extends. If you have a cooktop against the wall, you’ll want the backsplash to cover the wall so you don’t need to repaint often. For the rest of the kitchen, you’ll need to decide if the backsplash extends to the upper cabinets or a predefined height on the wall. Some homeowners extend the backsplash to the ceiling where there are no cabinets.

Material and Color

You’ve chosen your cabinets and countertops – what do you want for the space in between? The most common material used for backsplashes today is tile. If tile isn’t to your taste, consider the same granite as your countertops. Another popular option is metal, such as copper or tin.

Let’s assume your plan for your kitchen remodel is a tile backsplash. There is no hard rule to choosing a tile color. Pick something you love that compliments the other elements in the room or adjoining rooms and have fun with it. If you want to add a pop of color, choose a glass tile accent along with your primary neutral tile. Combining colors or using a bold color for your backsplash can be fun and decorative.

Pattern

The shape of the tile will dictate the installation of the tile. Square tiles can be laid straight or diagonally. Rectangular tiles have two common options: subway and herringbone patterns. If you’re afraid of bold color tile, a creative pattern may be just the right alternative to create visual interest.

Cost is another element you may need to consider if your kitchen remodeling project is running over budget. Many basic tiles and installation methods will complement your kitchen without breaking the bank. The best way to start your kitchen remodel is with a design build firm like G.M.
