Are You Doing a Surface Bathroom Remodel or a Total Remodel?

If the thought of remodeling a bathroom brings to mind chaos and confusion, you’re not alone. We’ve all heard the stories about a job that went far over budget or never was completed as it should have been. Whether you’re considering a surface remodel or a major one, you and your design/build company must have a plan to ensure success and satisfaction.

The Surface Remodel

If you have a bathroom where everything works but you wish it looked a little more modern, you might opt for a surface remodel. Some homeowners tackle these on their own, which can be effective and save money. It all depends on your available time and skill level. Here are a few things typically involved in a surface remodel:

  • Replacing faucets
  • Repainting
  • Adding or replacing towel bars
  • New décor

A more experienced DIYer might also replace a sink or even countertops. No matter how extensive or minor your bathroom remodeling project, its success depends on a plan. Make sure you have the tools and tackle things in a logical order. For example, if you plan on replacing a countertop, do that before you repaint or you may find yourself needing to touch up an area.

Total Remodel? Consider a Design/Build Company

A design/build company is different from a contractor in that it will handle your project from design through completion. Most make a clear plan that will help ensure that you love the results, and that the project sticks to both budget and timeline.

There are two types of total remodels: one where you and the designer work on a new layout, possibly including an addition or moving a wall in the home, and another where you keep the same layout but replace everything. Depending on which remodel you want, the plan will vary slightly. As you interview various companies to handle your project, ask about their plans and how they will communicate with you throughout the remodel. This will tell you a lot about the company and if they should be on your list of remodelers to consider.
