What You Should Know About His & Hers Bathroom Remodeling

Today’s families are busier than ever before. What makes every morning easier is a bathroom that allows both spouses the opportunity to get ready when they need to without stepping on each other’s toes. Ideally, when you complete your bathroom remodel, you won’t need to implement a bathroom schedule. How do you get started on a bathroom that works for you as a couple?

Today’s families are busier than ever before. What makes every morning easier is a bathroom that allows both spouses the opportunity to get ready when they need to without stepping on each other’s toes. Ideally, when you complete your bathroom remodel, you won’t need to implement a bathroom schedule. How do you get started on a bathroom that works for you as a couple?

Start With Communication

If you and your spouse communicate what’s important to you in the new bathroom upfront, it will be easier for your bathroom remodeling company to come up with a plan. Here are some elements to talk about before you have the initial meeting with your remodeler:

  • Shower/tub combo or separate tub and shower?
  • Two vanities or one?
  • TV, speakers or other technology?
  • Separate toilet closet?

What is important to you may not even be in the thoughts of your partner. Think about what does and doesn’t work in your current bathroom and you’ll be better prepared for the initial conversation with your bathroom remodeling company

Be Realistic When It Comes to Space

Depending on the space you have and the features you want, you may find that you need to make compromises. Two vanities take up a lot of space compared to one. If you are looking to add a soaking tub, you may need to steal space from an adjoining room or plan an addition. Although it’s better to have a bathroom that makes your day easier than one with all the features you think you need, ask your remodeling company about creative ways to find storage or make the space to accommodate your extras.

Two of Everything Please

For couples where both partners work and need to get ready in the morning at the same time, having separate spaces really helps. The extreme solution – two separate bathrooms – is a growing trend. Some people don’t care for an audience when performing their morning ritual. Of course, having separate bathrooms isn’t always realistic because of space, but it can be a consideration.

A more realistic approach for most homeowners is to make the space a convenient as possible for two people. At a minimum, that means two sinks with enough area around each one that you won’t bump into one another while getting ready. If you have the space for a large shower, consider two showerheads. Depending on your needs, you may find that two medicine cabinets is also necessary.
