5 Considerations Before Adding an Extra Bathroom

An extra bathroom offers several benefits. It provides convenience, reduces foot traffic, and boosts home value. But before making any upgrades, you need to look into some important factors.

5 considerations before adding an extra bathroom

While the style, color, and fixtures are essential, you should also focus on these five practical considerations when adding an extra bathroom to your home.

1. Function

You need to determine what kind of bathroom you need and how you’re going to use it. For example, if you want a full bathroom in your guest room, there should be a vanity, shower and/or tub, sink, and toilet. But if you’re only looking to build a powder room, a sink, toilet, and mirror are all you need.

2. Ventilation

Since bathrooms are often humid, make sure the space is going to be properly ventilated. Otherwise, moisture will build up and cause mold and mildew growth. Ideally, your extra bathroom should also have a window for natural ventilation. But if there’s no space for a window, make sure to install an extractor fan or dehumidifier to control moisture.

3. Space

Regardless of the size of your home, it’s important to identify the allotted area for the extra bathroom. You should also check whether your space is enough for all the fixtures or if an extension is needed.

4. Location

Another crucial consideration is the location of your new bathroom. There should be access to electrical outlets, and your bathroom must be connected to existing hot and cold water supplies, waste pipes, and other related utility systems.

5. Cost

This depends on various factors, such as the room size, design, and materials. To avoid surprises at the end of the remodel, consult your contractor about the estimated cost of your project before starting any work.
