Home Additions: An Alternative to Remodeling

If you’re planning a home remodel, you may not have yet thought about an addition. Depending on your reason for home remodeling, you may realize that an addition is necessary. Not all additions are grand; some simply add just the right amount of space and others can help you better utilize existing space.

Home Additions: An Alternative to Remodeling

Kitchen Additions

With more people working and learning at home, we’re utilizing our kitchens more than ever. If you’ve been wanting a new kitchen, now is a great time to consider remodeling. If a kitchen makeover is only part of your home remodeling project, you may want to think about an addition. Kitchen additions are often a new room and other times just a few extra feet added onto the existing room to create more usable space.

Additional Bathroom

We’re adding bathrooms to homes at an increasing rate. When your kids are home all day and you and your spouse are working from home, one or two bathrooms don’t always provide the convenience needed. When all of a sudden everyone has to be ready at the same time, it’s slightly more difficult to manage a single sink or whatever limitations you have in your space. Whether you need an additional bathroom or just more space in your current bathroom, an addition can solve the issue.

Mudroom/Laundry Room

Often, when we speak with a client about a whole home remodeling project, one of the first requests is a laundry or mudroom. Families want more than just a space for a washer and dryer. As we work through reconfiguring other spaces in the home so it better suits everyone’s needs, we often end up recommending an addition to create the space the homeowner wants and needs for their laundry room. These additions sometimes take space from an existing covered porch or breezeway attached to the garage.

Home Office/Learning Space

We know many more families now have at least one parent working from home. Many have chosen to homeschool or are utilizing online learning. Although kitchen tables, desks in bedrooms and even a foldable table in a living space can work, ideally you want a space that promotes productivity. Additions over the garage are a great place for a home office or school room. If your property has the space, you can add a room off the back of your home to get the space your family needs.
