Just because the temperature drops doesn’t mean home remodeling projects stop. In fact, there are only a few projects that have to wait until it’s well above freezing out, like roofing and adding brick to the outside of a home. Let’s look at some of the common remodeling projects we’ve done in winters past!
Basement Finishing
Finishing a basement is one of the easiest projects to plan and tackle in the winter months. This is because you don’t have to figure out what to do with your furniture and other belongings. Unfinished basements are a blank canvas for your remodeling company. If you need a play space for kids, a family room, game room, man cave or just about anything else, the basement is a great space to finish and furnish over the winter.
Bathroom Remodeling
If you’ve been putting off a bathroom remodel, now is a great time to get started. Because most homes have more than one bathroom, being without one any time of year isn’t much more than an inconvenience. And, because it’s a smaller space, only a portion of your home will be under construction. Any work your remodeling company needs to do outside isn’t impacted by the temperature.
New Deck
If you’re considering a new deck, you may think that winter isn’t the time to tackle this project. However, there are reasons to do this in early winter. One of the biggest benefits is that the footings can be installed during a relatively dry time. They’ll be more stable than if they’re dug and set during spring, when the ground is wet. Plus, pressure-treated wood is most stable in the dry conditions of early winter. If the deck can be finished, including paint or stain, before the first snowfall, winter is an excellent time for a new deck.
Additions With Interior Home Remodeling
For the same reason a new deck’s footing is best installed when it’s dry, the foundation for an addition is also best laid in the early winter months. Dry, hard ground makes for a firm and stable foundation. And, if you get started soon enough, your remodeling company will be working inside when the snow begins to fall. That means when the time comes to tear down what was once an exterior wall, your home will be secure from the elements and the rest of the interior home remodeling plans can being.
Projects That Shouldn’t Be Done in Winter
There are only a handful of things that can’t or shouldn’t be done in the winter. You want a roof installation to be completed before the temperatures drop below freezing. It’s less convenient to be without a kitchen in the winter because it’s harder to grill outside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan your kitchen remodel for the winter months.
