Small Details With Big Remodeling Impact

As you begin to work with your remodeling company on a home remodel, you have many decisions to make. At first, you may think that the little things don’t matter as much as the big decisions. However, sometimes the smallest of details make the biggest impact in how your home feels and looks after the remodel. If you want yours to turn out just as you envisioned it, take time to choose every element. Here are some things you should discuss with your remodeler during the planning process.

Small Details With Big Remodeling Impact

The Hardware

Although we consider hardware primarily in bathroom and kitchen remodels, you also have hardware on every door in your home. Choosing the right finish in a coordinating style can change the feel and style of the space. Knobs on cabinets and doors can create a fun feel, add a pop of color or emphasize your style.

Vents

If you’re replacing your carpet with hardwood flooring, consider wood venting that is stained to match your floors. You’ll appreciate the cohesive look. If you’re doing a total remodel and have the opportunity to move the vents, now is the best time to do so. Think about the arrangement of your furniture and see if another location would be beneficial.

Storage

Nearly every home can benefit from more or better storage. Kitchen remodels are one of the easiest times to improve storage with custom and semi-custom cabinets. Don’t forget to add storage above your washer and dryer – this is a great room to add floor-to-ceiling cabinets for long-term seasonal storage. Talk to your remodeling company about other spaces where you could benefit from additional storage, like your bathrooms and master bedroom.

Lighting

Unless you have a prized fixture, you probably want to replace your lighting. You may even want to add additional fixtures to improve the lighting in a room. Undercabinet lighting makes a big difference in kitchen remodels. Some people add it under both the top and bottom cabinets. Others add it above their cabinets for a soft glow at night.

If you’re undergoing a whole home remodel, one of the most requested additions is lighting on the stairs and in hallways. With the advent of LED lighting, you can have bright lights on all the time that use very little electricity and keep your stairs and halls lit for greater safety.

Switches & Outlets

Builders don’t always put switches and outlets where they’re most convenient or needed. If your home is of the age that it needs a home remodel, chances are good that you want more outlets and perhaps USB outlets. Think about what you need and make the changes or additions before the electrician needs to make a second trip and before the drywall is finished.
