A duckling grows into a swan

A ³fixer-upper² is often a challenge. A young couple purchased a Webster post and beam home with their work cut out for them.

Their first interior transformation focused on the kitchen. The oak builder-grade cabinets and orange laminate countertops had to go, replaced by UltraCraft Vision maple cabinetry and dark laminate countertops. The floor plan was inefficient, especially for a two-cook kitchen. Inadequate storage and floor space were also problematic.

By removing a closet from the eating area, and redesigning the prep space, efficiency was maximized. A stainless steel corner slide-in range with matching stainless micro-range hood became the first visual impression from the front door, replacing the previous view of a large white refrigerator.

The adjacent corner now houses a double sink and a new transom window allows a great view and added light. With the unique design of using the corners for the sink and range, the kitchen can now accommodate two cooks with ease.

The previous closet was replaced with a small serving area that included two deep pantry cabinets, which enhances storage and provides an area for serving dishes when dining.

Black accents and black moulding add visual interest. A new tile floor ties all the elements together, setting the stage for a beautiful room A set of family dishes and a lattice wine rack dress up the serving area.

"Pam (designer) was fantastic to work with," the homeowner said. "She listened to what we disliked about our house, and came up with ideas to create more space and more storage. Matt (project manager) was fabulous and was careful with all the details. Everyone was friendly and made everything just right. We¹ve already referred two other homeowners to G.M. Roth."
