Extended family space solution

When the homeowners, parents of five children, invited the children's grandparents to move into their home in New Hampshire, more space was needed. A 1,500 square foot second story was added over the garage. A residential chair lift was installed to a separate stairway entrance on the side of the garage to assist the elderly couple into their new home.

The first floor of the new apartment holds a study for the grandfather as well as a full bathroom, kitchen, eating area and family room. Knee walls are used for storage and to display the couple's extensive collection of English brass. The double French door spills out onto a scond floor deck, complete with mountain views, hummingbird feeders, patio furniture and a bubbling fountain — accessible outdoor living space within a few steps.

The second floor has a master bedroom suite that includes a full size bath and a full service laundry. Closets utilize spaces where the roof line recedes. The mountains are visible through the clever placement of windows on all sides of the second floor.

All objectives have been met: a very private retreat, away from the rest of the family, yet on the same property to allow for daily interaction between family members as desired. The application of universal design has made this new home safe and accessible for the aging couple, while preserving the comfort and beauty of their previous large family home.
