If you’re undergoing either a kitchen or bathroom remodel, you’re going to need new countertops. Chances are good that your older kitchen has laminate or tile countertops. Bathrooms often have laminate or solid-surface/cultured marble countertop and sink combinations. If you’re wondering what the right countertop for your home is, here is what you need to know about each material before you make the choice.
Quartz
Today’s most popular countertop option is quartz. It’s durable, low-maintenance and stain-resistant. Thanks to improvements in manufacturing, you can choose from virtually limitless color and pattern options. The only real drawback to quartz is if you’re a cook who wants to be able to set a hot pan directly on the counter, you might want to choose another option since direct heat can cause damage. Likewise, if you use curling wands or straighteners and aren’t careful in the bathroom, the heat can scorch quartz.
Granite
Granite is a great option anywhere in your home. Laundry rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and even home offices use granite. Depending on your budget, the options for color and pattern are vast and many people love the natural movement in slabs of granite. Its only real drawback is that you do have to seal it and maintain the seal to keep it in the best condition possible.
Marble
With the black and white kitchen remodel still a popular trend, marble is a frequent choice for homeowners choosing this style. Some marble has gray tones and makes for a great countertop choice on top of gray cabinets. For a sophisticated look for a bathroom remodel, consider a matte finish. Just keep in mind that marble stains easily so you’ll want to clean up any spills as soon as they happen.
Butcher Block
We’d never recommend butcher block in the bathroom, but it’s becoming quite the trend in kitchens, especially on islands. You might not want all your counters to feature this material, but it’s a great way to add warmth to a kitchen.
Solid-Surface
Although solid-surface countertops are still common, they’re not a great choice if resale is a consideration in your home remodel. One benefit is that this option is inexpensive; however, a drawback is that it scratches easily. Rarely do we install solid-surface countertops in a kitchen remodel, and only occasionally in a bathroom remodel in the form of cultured marble.
Laminate/Formica
Laminate countertops are one of the reasons many homeowners choose to remodel their kitchen. Admittedly, today’s laminate looks better than what you may have in your home currently, but it still scratches easily and water can cause damage. Plus, you can’t set a hot pot on it and you don’t want to cut on it. Unless your kitchen or bathroom remodel is in a rental property, we’d recommend another option.
