Elements to Consider in Your Next Bathroom Remodel

Every remodeling project involves many important decisions. You might be surprised to learn that a bathroom remodel has more variables than just about any other project! As you start your planning with your bathroom remodeling company, here are several elements you might want to consider.

Elements to Consider in Your Next Bathroom Remodel

Existing Electrical & Plumbing

If you’re undergoing a total bathroom remodel and rearranging the space, you will need new plumbing and electrical run. However, if you’re just updating the space and keeping the layout the same, you might want to discuss with your contractor the existing infrastructure. If the pipes are aging or the wiring doesn’t meet today’s code, now is the time to discuss upgrading or rewiring. It’s much cheaper to do it during the remodel than in the future when there’s an issue.

Addition of Natural Light

If your bathroom doesn’t have ample natural light, consider adding some. Even if the shower is against the only exterior wall, you can still have natural light. A small transom-style window can brighten the space. If you want to be able to open the window, an awning window is a great option. Glass blocks are a nice way to have natural light without compromising privacy or needing to add a curtain if you have wall space above a garden tub.

Upgrade Your Storage

With more bathroom toiletries than ever before, additional storage can be helpful. Some vanities come with deep drawers and others have built-in storage for hair tools with an outlet right in the drawer. These options can make a big difference. Don’t discount a medicine cabinet. Although these cabinets are not as common as they once were, they are a way to add storage if you don’t have much space.

Flooring

Almost every bathroom remodel we handle includes tile flooring. It’s a good fit for the wet area in a bathroom. However, you can change the feel of the space with the size of the tile and the pattern you choose. If you’re not a fan of cleaning grout, talk about how to minimize the grout lines in your bathroom. When you’re discussing flooring, ask about heated floors. Today’s heated flooring is significantly more affordable and energy-efficient than what was available a few decades ago, making it a great option to consider when your bathroom remodeling project includes new floors.

Water Circulator

If your hot water heater is far from your bathroom and you spend an inordinate amount of time waiting for hot water, consider adding a water circulator during your remodel. You may be wasting hundreds of gallons of water each year waiting for hot water! You can schedule the circulating pump to run only during the times of day you need it and you’ll have nearly instant hot water without wasting water or electricity.
